Examples of Faulty Parallelism in English Grammar

Faulty parallelism is one of the major grammatical sins in the English language. When you come across faulty parallelism, it clangs off the ear, destroys written sentences, and muddies any intention the author may have had. The previous sentence is an example of correct parallelism, but more on that below. Faulty Parallelism   Faulty parallelism is a construction in which two or more parts of a sentence are equivalent in meaning but not grammatically similar in form. By contrast, proper parallelism  is the placement of equal ideas in words, phrases, or clauses of similar types, notes  Prentice Hall, an education materials and textbook publisher. Properly crafted sentences match nouns with nouns,  verbs  with verbs, and phrases or  clauses  with similarly-constructed phrases or clauses. This will ensure that your sentences read smoothly, that the reader hones in on your meaning, and that they are not distracted by inequal parts. Faulty Parallelism  Examples The best way to learn what faulty parallelism is  Ã¢â‚¬â€Ã‚  and how to correct it  Ã¢â‚¬â€Ã‚  is to focus on an example. The company offers special college training to help hourly employees move into professional careers like engineering management, software development, service technicians, and sales trainees. Notice the faulty comparison of occupations (engineering management and software development) to people (service technicians and sales trainees).  To  avoid faulty parallelism, make certain that each element in a  series  is similar in form and structure to all others in the same series, as this corrected sentence demonstrates: The company offers special college training to help hourly employees move into professional careers like  engineering management, software development, technical services, and  sales. Note that all of the items in the series  Ã¢â‚¬â€Ã‚  engineering management, software development, technical services, and  sales  Ã¢â‚¬â€Ã‚  are now all the same because they are all examples of occupations. Faulty Parallelism in Lists You can also find faulty parallelism in lists. Just as in a series in a sentence, all items in a list must be alike. The list below is an example of faulty parallelism. Read it and see if you can determine what is incorrect about the way the list is constructed. We defined our purpose.Who is our audience? What should we do?Discuss findings. Our conclusions. Finally, recommendations. Notice that in this list, some items are full sentences starting with a subject, such as we for item 1 and who for 2. Two items, 2 and 3, are questions, but item 4 is a short, declarative sentence. Items 5 and 6, by contrast, are sentence fragments. Now take a look at the next example, which shows the same list but with a correct parallel structure: Define purpose.Analyze audience.Determine methodology.Discuss findings.Draw conclusions.Make recommendations. Notice that in this corrected example, each item begins with a verb (Define, Analyze, and Determine) followed by an object (purpose, audience, and methodology). This makes the list much easier to read because it is comparing like things using equivalent grammatical structure and punctuation: verb, noun, and period. Proper Parallel Structure In the opening paragraph of this article, the second sentence employs parallel structure correctly. If it had not, the sentence might have read: When you come across faulty parallelism, it clangs off the ear, it destroys written sentences, and the writer didnt make her meaning clear. In this sentence, the first two items in the series are essentially mini-sentences with the same grammatical structure: a subject (it), and an object or predicate (clangs off the ear and destroys written sentences). The third item, while still a mini-sentence, offers a different subject (author) who is actively doing something (or not doing something). You can correct this by rewriting the sentence as it is listed in the opening paragraph, or you can reconstruct it so that it serves as the subject for all three phases: When you come across faulty parallelism, it clangs off the ear, it destroys written sentences, and it muddies any intention the author may have had. You now have equivalent parts in this series: clangs off the ear, destroys written sentences, and muddies any intention. The verb-object repeats three times. By using parallel structure, you are building a sentence that is balanced, displays perfect harmony, and serves as music to the readers ear. Source Faulty Parallelism. Prentice-Hall, Inc.

In Buddhism, individuals are reborn into different lives after death, and their rebirth is dependent on karma, which is dependent on their actions. Poe essay Free Essays

Tuesday Great literature is often influenced by the lives of those who write it. Edgar Allan Poe is a clear example of a life influencing art. Two tragic events or afflictions from Edgar Allan Poe’s life that influence much of his writing are violent death and the use of alcohol. We will write a custom essay sample on Poe essay or any similar topic only for you Order Now Each of these reflects into two stories each. The first tragic event would be violent death. This affliction comes up in many of his pieces of writing, especially in â€Å"The Raven† and â€Å"The Tell-Tale Heart†. Examples from the poem â€Å"The Raven† that illustrate a heartbreaking death would be the loss of Lenore, of course. Text support is the line â€Å"And each separate dying ember wrought its ghost upon the floor† On many occasions Poe mentions the loss of his beloved Lenore. The violent, tragic roll comes into place when the raven says his sorrow and despair will go away nevermore. In â€Å"The Tell-Tale Heart†, the narrator loves this old man; however he stalks him for 8 nights and murders him. After the murder, he buries the old man’s body beneath the floor boards. These 2 tragic deaths express his feelings about how every woman he loved died a bloody, unfortunate, scary death due to tuberculosis. The Tell-Tale Heart† is a great candidate for the second tragic event or affliction as well, being the use of alcohol. It doesn’t make much sense that the narrator would kill somebody he loved, right? If you notice, he mentions his â€Å"disease†, referring to alcoholism. The abuse of alcohol made him go mad. The second example out of text would be â€Å"The Black Cat†. The narrator refers to the term â€Å"fiend intemperance† When he is overtaken with alcohol, he becomes more and more irritable and moody†¦ so he killed his cat that loved him the more he hated it. In real life, Poe was known to use lcohol, which made him go insane. He became very irritable and crazy while under the influence and that definitely changed him for the worse. As you can see, Edgar Allan Poe incorporated many factors of his life and real dilemmas into his writing. Maybe that’s why he was such a great writer, because it was how he expressed his true feelings. Some people play sports, some people draw, some people have other hobbies to express themselves, Poe wrote. Poe’s stories and poems were indeed fiction, but definitely have a little bit of a realistic edge to them. poe essay By agullo How to cite Poe essay, Essays

Finance Real Earnings Management and Cost of Capital

Question: Discuss about theFinance for Real Earnings Management and Cost of Capital. Answer: Critical Analysis: Cluster analysis is a process which use to group a set of items that are similar with each other than the items of other groups. In this report, it has been to estimate cost of capital of a firm. It is very evident that for many firms, such as mining companies, cost of capital, calculated under general and popular methods, is not quite relevant and realistic. Moreover, many big companies, like Google Inc., do not pay dividends. In that case, ascertaining cost of capital by using CAPM model may not be possible (Core et al. 2015). The report describes that divisional cost of capital and cost of capital from accounting data can be used as the required rate of return for such occasions. However, both the methods have some limitations (Kim and Sohn 2013). Cluster analysis method, on the other hand, relies on the accounting data and market data of the proxy firms, which are similar to the actual firm in terms of activity. As the method includes a group of similar firms, the outcomes become more authenticate in context to the market valuation. The cluster analysis method selects the proxy firms based on the accounting data. It can be described as very practical selection process, as market data of the actual firm is not available, but it would have the accounting data surely. Moreover, the proxy firms are incorporated on the basis of the close resemblance with the accounting data of the actual firm. Thus, it reduce possibility of inaccurate outcomes to the minimum extent. The accounting data, used for the analysis process are ROE and cash flow from operations. For deeper analysis, ROE is calculated by using DuPont Formula. Thus, the analysis process covers the profitability, leverage and asset turnover of the firms within a single method and can work on more detailed data. Cash flow from operations depicts the liquidity aspect and working capital structure of the firms. Therefore, by incorporating the operational cash flow, the method can correlate the outcomes with the liquidity position of the company also (Healy and Palepu 2012). The correlation of variation is calculated for both ROE and cash flow of all the firms to synchronize with the risk factors and compare the accounting data of the firm in more accurate manner. Moreover, the outcomes for each firm are compared with balance group to ensure the accuracy of the process. It also ensures that main outcome should not be affected by any under or over weighted data of any specific firm. Finally, , the cost of capital of the selected firm is calculated by using regression analysis on the basis of the calculated CVs of the all firms and the market CAPM, risk-free rate of market, expected market return. As the cost of capital is based on the data of similar firms, regression analysis helps to set a range of the cost (Berger et al. 2012). Conclusion From the above discussion, it is clear that cluster analysis incorporates and uses all the elements quite efficiently to determine the cost of capital of a firm. Though, it is a quite lengthy process, the delivered outcomes can be considered as more accurate than other unconventional methods of cost of capital evaluation. However, the process is better for evaluation of any business or firm. It cannot be used for stock trading purpose, as stock trading requires data that are more accurate. Moreover, it cannot provide proper results for any specific firm, which is unique within the industry or owns some unique property. For example, a pharmaceutical company may invent a revolutionary drug. In that case, the accounting data of other similar type of drug companies will be insufficient to measure its cost of capital, as the company will be ahead of others for a certain period of time.
